That sounds like an epic overland trek! Crossing from the “Warm Heart of Africa” through Tanzania and into the “Pearl of Africa” is a true test of stamina and a front-row seat to some of the continent’s most beautiful landscapes.

Lilongwe to Mbeya
This route is operated by two companies and both have different departure times and days. The total distance from Lilongwe to Mbeya is 760 kilometres and average cost is MWk150000/ USD50. The journey passes through kasungu, Mzuzu, Karonga, songwe, kusumulu, etc. Estimated travel duration of about 12 to 15 hours (heavily dependent on border clearance at Songwe/Kasumulu).
Falcon coaches operates twice weekly from Lilongwe on Mondays and Saturdays. Surprise luxury coach operates three times weekly from Lilongwe on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.


Mbeya to Mwanza
Traveling from Mbeya to Mwanza is a long-distance journey across Tanzania that takes you from the Southern Highlands all the way to the shores of Lake Victoria.
We strongly recommend using Chakaby luxury coaches they depart at 15:00 from Mbeya with an estimated arrival at 04:30 am the following morning. The journey covers a distance of about 1280 kilometres. Average ticket cost is about Tsh80000/ USD35.
This is a major transit route for traders, tourism and students. The journey passes through Iringa, Dodoma, Mafinga, Singida, etc. The other bus operators for this route are Ally trans, Happy nation, New force, etc.

Mwanza to Kampala
Traveling from Mwanza to Kampala takes you across the border from Tanzania into Uganda. This route is a popular choice for traders and travelers heading toward the northern shores of Lake Victoria
We strongly recommend Isamilo xpress is the best choice for the this leg of the journey. Total distance is about 718 kilometres and average ticket price is Tsh65-80000/ USD31. Departure time is at 17:00 with an estimated arrival time at 00:30 at Kisenyi bus terminal.
The bus passes through the following towns Sengerema, Geita, Chato, Muleba, Masela, etc.

The The journey goes through the Mutukula Border Post, which is a One-Stop Border Post (OSBP). This means you clear both Tanzanian and Ugandan immigration in a single building, making the process much faster.

Immigration control:
Your passport needs a minimum validity of six months and two blank pages. Don’t leave the immigration counter without your passport being stamped. For this journey your passport should be stamped four times.

At the moment you can only get your tickets through office walk ins. You can book through their official WhatsApp number. It is highly recommended to book your seat at the Lilongwe office at least 24 hours in advance.

Timezone
This bus adventure is a cross two different timezones. As soon as you cross the Songwe river from Malawi into Tanzania most devices will automatically change their timezone. In Malawi we use the Central African Time (CAT) which is GMT +2. In Tanzania there use the East African Time (EAT) which is GMT +3.

What You Need To Know:
- Valid passport: minimum validity of six months and two blank pages.
- Vaccination: Ensure you have your yellow fever certificate handy—it’s strictly checked at the Tanzanian and Ugandan borders. If you aren’t a COMESA citizen, check your visa requirements for Tanzania and Uganda ahead of time.
- Currency: You’ll be switching between Malawian Kwacha (MWK), Tanzanian Shillings (TZS), and Ugandan Shillings (UGX). Carry some USD for emergencies, but try to use local mobile money (like Airtel Money or MTN) where possible, as it’s king in East Africa.
- Comfort is Key: You are looking at roughly 36 to 48 hours of travel depending on bus speeds and border delays. Pack a power bank, plenty of water, and snacks that won’t spoil in the heat.
- Be Flexible: Delays are common due to road conditions, vehicle maintenance, or long border queues. Do not have a rigid schedule.
