Malawi Lake Services Limited, a Malawian-owned company, took over port management of all ports on lake Malawi. Malawi Government terminated two marine concession agreements with Mota-Engil subsidiaries Malawi Shipping Company (MSC) and Malawi Ports Company (MPC) for alleged breach of concession requirements.
The four main ports
Monkey-bay Port; is where the famous Mv Ilala ship docks and begins its weekly sojourn up and down the Lake.

Chipoka Port is the closest waterfront to the capital city of Lilongwe. It is also the only point in the country where rail and lake waterfront meet.

Nkhata-bay port, Asmall sheltered harbour which is a focal point for Malawi’s fishing industry, as well as a gateway to the islands of Chizumulu and Likoma.

Chilumba port, is located along the western shore of Lake Malawi, at the southern end of Karonga District in the north. Its the northern most port on Lake Malawi closest to the Songwe border post.

Lake Malawi – Tanzania Ports Authority
Lake Malawi’s northern and eastern shores form much of Malawi’s boundary with Tanzania and Mozambique and this area forms the The Southern Tanzania ‘alleyway. Below are ports on the Tanzanian side of Lake Malawi.
Kiwira Port has been established as cargo terminal. It has a jetty and ramp suitable to handle passenger and cargo. Its equipped with handling machines like mobile crane, fork lifts and grabs. It is the home port for two cargo vessels, MV RUVUMA and MV NJOMBE and one passenger/cargo vessel called MV. MBEYA II which are owned by Tanzania Government

Mbamba Port is opposite Nkhata Bay on the Tanzania side. the port plays a crucial role in connecting Tanzania with Malawi and Zambia, serving as a vital link for the transportation of food and agricultural products between these regions.

Other ports are Manda Port It has a building used as the port office and one room is set aside as a goods shed. Liuli Port located about 34 kms from Mbamba Bay. It has a building used as the port office and one room is set aside as a goods shed.
